What is Oxidative Stress?

Free radicals, which are formed during the metabolism of toxic substances taken into the body by external effects, cause many functional and metabolic disorders in the cell. The free radicals formed can damage all important structures of cells such as lipid, protein, DNA and carbohydrate. This damage caused by free radicals in the body is called “oxidative damage”. Free radicals also occur as a by-product of normal cell metabolic oxidation and as toxic waste. Antioxidants protect cells from oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals. Glutathione is the most powerful “anti-oxidant” substance produced in our body. It captures and accumulates free radicals and plays a role in neutralizing them in the liver. Glutathione provides a protective effect against oxidative stress that damages cells, mercury and other toxic metals, alcohol and organic pollutants accumulating in the body.
