What is Trans Fat?

Foods High in Trans Fat
Trans fat has almost become fashionable in the world. You’ve probably heard over and over that this type of fat is bad for you. But what is trans fat – and why should it be avoided?
Trans Fats are naturally present in small amounts in some meat and dairy products. However, hydrogenated oil is sometimes added artificially to many foods, as it makes similar products degrade more slowly. While doctors and scientists aren’t entirely sure how bad naturally occurring trans fats are for you, they do know that artificial trans fats can lead to high cholesterol and a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and even diabetes.
Foods Containing Trans Fats
fried foods
Fried foods such as french fries, cheese sticks, and fish cakes can contain trans fat, depending on the type of oil they’re cooked in. If there are, you should consume them in a controlled manner.
Margarine
Margarine is sometimes marketed as a healthier alternative to butter, but some types of margarine actually contain up to two grams of trans fat per tablespoon.
Dairy-Free Coffee Creamer
It’s possible that your daily dose of caffeine is also giving you a daily dose of trans fat. Many non-dairy coffee creamers use oils that contain trans fats. Be sure to check the ingredients to find out what type of oil it contains.
Meat and Dairy Products
Trans fat occurs naturally in meat and dairy products. However, scientists need to do more research on these naturally occurring trans fats enough to know if they are just as harmful as the artificial ones. Many still believe it’s a good idea to reduce possible intake by eating lean meats and low-fat dairy products.
